You're Going To Do What?!?

That is the statement I would use to most accurately describe the horrified look on people's faces when they hear that Jon and I have decided to use cloth diapers with our little one. Now if you would have told me a year ago that I would use cloth diapers, I probably would give you the same look I've been getting lately. It wasn't until I met a few people (one good friend in particular) who swear by them that I began to think about the idea. After plenty of talk and research, we've decided we're all for it!

Now, when most people think of cloth diapers this is the picture they envision:

An ill-fitting diaper secured with diaper pins that must be a bear to scramble around with when trying to change a newborn. Well, that was then and this...

...is now.

So, now that you have the first picture out of your head, let's talk about why Jon and I decided to go the cloth diaper route. The main reason it first appealed to me was the fact that it saves money. Comparison studies indicate that diapering costs for the first year of a baby's life are $1000 to $1500 less with cloth diapers. Since cloth diapers are reusable they can be passed on from child to child as long as they are well taken care of, cutting even further the cost of diapering the following children. Aside from the money, research I have done indicates that cloth diapers help to cut down if not completely eliminate diaper rash and aid in speeding up potty training. One other fairly obvious aspect of cloth as opposed to disposable is that they are more environmentally friendly, although Jon rolls his eyes a bit at this. :-)

One of the first comments people say when they get over the shock of our cloth diaper usage in the 21st century is "Gross!" Now maybe my idea of gross is a little different from most people due to the fact that we've been picking up after our Great Dane for 2 years now. I honestly don't think we can be phased by whatever sized blow-out this little one decides to dish out. As a side note, we're not planning on using cloth diapers until we have gotten a little more use to the chaos of having a baby around. Somewhere around the third month or so I think we may switch over, but we'll start out with disposables. See, we're not TOO crazy.

Now I know that plenty of people will still think we are nuts and that's fine with me. To each his own in the diapering world. However I can't help but think in this convenience based, throw away society that maybe a little extra work and invested time is worth the payoff. I suppose we'll find out firsthand soon!

You know that first picture of the "then" cloth diapers? Those are the kind that were used on me. :)

I'm in full support of this decision, I would be doing it myself if I were a full-time stay-at-home mommy, but I don't know if Tony would be on board. Are these the diapers with the inserts that you take out and wash and re-use? You have me thinking now...maybe I would be up for it for my next one even though I work part-time, so you will have to keep us posted on how it goes! Good for you!!!

I like that you're using cloth. I think that if I had a washer with hot water and a dryer, I would do that. I do know people here without either that do cloth diapers, but to me the prospect is too daunting. But I certainly don't think you're crazy! I think they're probably better. Btw, I'm totally going to check out your registries and steal some ideas. :) I have to figure out what to register for.

Kristen

I will certainly keep you posted. This will be interesting for sure! Ruth, as far as our registries go we are minimalists. I checked with two friends of mine who have kids and they gave me bare bones options for registries which is kind of the route we went. The registries are still a work in progress though. Hopefully they will be of some help. I'll have to admit that putting together a registry was pretty daunting. There are so many things they say you "need" when in reality you can get by on very little.

Jen, we are going with a variety of prefolds (more old school) with a waterproof cover and some inserts. I plan on posting another blog about what exactly are cloth diapering plan is which will give you a better idea. I'm honestly kind of excited about this. Yeah I know, I'm such a dork!!

Christel, I still know a few girls who use those so I guess they are not super old school. Hey when are you coming back to the States? Are you planning on staying here long term?

I was thinking about doing this for a while, but I just never could get Kevin very interested...and I couldn't get myself motivated to do that much more laundry (probably one of my least favorite activities:-) I think it's GREAT that you guys are going to do it though! I'm going to start with disposables, but I'm still keeping an eye on cloth, so please update us with how it's going (I'd be really interested in hearing)! I'm also keeping the thought in mind for baby #2 when we've got more of a hold on the whole parenting thing!!!

I sent you all a link today to Cloth Diapering FAQs -- it looked interesting!

I'm excited about your baby blog.

Love you two (three)!

I love this blog! It's great that you guys are sharing about all of the decisions you are making throughout this process, because it's good for convenience freaks like me to hear. But it'll also be nice for you to be able to look back on this several babies from now and treasure the memories. Love you!
